Thing 23

While I did not complete all 23 Things, I did reach my goal of finishing 15 by June 15. I have learned so much through this process. For instance, Tablets and Phones are not really the same kind of mobile device. I guess there isn't a device that does everything. I am interested in photos and video which I could not do with Nexus 7. I am seriously considering iPad Mini.

At first I was painstakingly studying each app before deciding what to try. By the end it seemed easier to just load something interesting and just see how it worked. So I  have gained some ease with using apps. That can't hurt anything.

Overall, not too happy with giving so much access to personal information in order to use some apps. Rather prefer the apps that have no special requirements.

I am happy to have given 23 Things a try. I will go back and pick up some of the Things that I skipped.

Thanks for everything!

Thing 22

Searching online for Best apps of 2013, led me to Apps on Google Play to download free apps. I guess this is enough for a beginner! Just right back to the app store. But this is where I found Netflix and  Relax Melodies ( basically sound machine sort of white noise or nature sounds - I must be tired!)

Looked at Droid of the Day. Not to interested in random new apps.

Thing 21

I actually did Thing 22 first to hunt around for other good apps.
My favorite find, which might be obvious to many other people, was the Netflix App. It might be fun to have mobile access to our Netflix account for movies or tv series.

Thing 20 Games

Ever since I started 23 Things, my co-workers have been waiting for me to get addicted to Candy Crush. So I tried it. Not my kind of pastime!

Word Collapse was more fun for me. Who knew?

Thing 19 Hobbies

Not too much success here! Neither Sibley Birds or Spotify worked on Nexus 7. (Getting to be a pattern here.) Many apps are for phones. That is just how it is.

Thing 18 Education

Wikipedia App is pretty cool to have when you just need a quick fact check, or titles in a series, etc.

10 Monkeys Multiplication was really fun. Not just for kids - this type of app is also a good challenge for older folks who need to practice concentrating and thinking.

I am also interested in Life for iPad. Would love to see all the old photos.

Thing 17 Community

One thing that I like about Superior Hiking Trail App - no special permissions! They don't need to know everything about me in order to show me their info. I am excited about this app since we have hiked SHT many times. Lots of great information about the trials, trailheads, maps, conditions, etc. But does not work with Crome - so not with Nexus 7. Bummer.

MPR Radio App is certainly one of my all time favorites! Works fine on Nexus 7 even though it is designed for phones.

Going Out not compatible with my device...

Also want to try Mayo Clinic Patient App - Apple only

Thing 12

Audiobooks - easy!! public domain titles mostly. Search of most popular brings up a lot of classics and children's classics. Lists are largely alpha, so you have to know what you want. One cool thing about Audiobooks is multiple languages available. Keep that in mind for library users who may want audiobooks in another language.

iStoryBooks  is easy to access. Not the best istorybooks that I have seen by in pinch, you have it at your fingertips.

FreeBooks - for phones really - Not Nexus 7

Thing 11

ELM for mobile devices is a new favorite. I will be telling my co-workers about this one. So nice to be able to access ELM databases from a mobile device. I have used it some and it works well. I was not able to bookmark the site on Nexus 7 - well actually I did bookmark it but can't find the bookmark!
Also added Library Apps. Must remember to pass this tip on to library customers. So easy to use.

Skipping Things 9 & 10 for now

I am using Nexus 7, borrowed from the library. Not what I want to use for pictures. But let's just say for now that I learned that I may rather have a different device if pictures are going to be something I want to do. And I think it is! So hopefully I will get back to this next weekend with another device.

Thing 8

HootSuite is really attractive! The layout is friendly. Right now I have just 2 social media that I use, and really only one that I use with much regularity. Not something I need too much. I see some co-workers using HootSuite and now I understand what they are doing and why. Very nice to be able to keep up with multiple accounts without needing to sign into each separately. Just knowing a little bit about it and how it works could come in handy when helping the public with library computers.

Thing 7

Pinterest may be one of the first "fun" apps that really appeals to me. Immediately found recipes, gardening, craft ideas (some pinned by facebook friends). Hadn't used pinterest before trying this app.

Thing 6

QuickOffice is one of my favorite apps so far. This probably reveals my attitude about technology being used for work purposes. While creating documents on a tiny device, without a keyboard, doesn't seem right, editing exiting documents does seem very useful. Oh the cloud...

Thing 5

Tried Spring pad and found it a little bit complicated for me. A more seasoned app user may find it useful.
Then I explored Bamboo paper and really liked the more flexible set up.
Mostly I cannot too big on notes and lists. That is not to say that I would not benefit from using an app to keep track of projects etc.

Thing 4

Thing 4
Set up the Zite app. Seems like it will be fun to use on a daily basis. I had originally chosen several topics and was overwhelmed with so many entries. I am happier choosing one topic to scan at a time.

Thing 3

iHome sleep app
I can see how this could be useful, especially when traveling. Pretty easy to setup. Sound machine before sleep handy, but how long does it run?
Nice to be able to set volume on alarms.  Sounds OK. Not clear how to set up music, news, weather.
I will give it a try.
Could be used on phone for meeting reminder, etc.

Thing 2

As a new android user, I spent a lot of time studying (shopping) information on several devices. It was great to have such a wealth of reliable information at my fingertips. Thanks 23 mobile things! The next things should go faster.

Very First Blog - a lot to learn!
